The Importance of Preventive Maintenance

The Importance of Preventive Maintenance

Every vehicle needs maintenance to reach its full potential. The owner's manual tells you which preventive maintenance services to perform at which major milestones. These services vary depending on the vehicle and its mileage but usually include the following: changing fluids, replacing parts, and inspecting the specified systems. The purpose of auto maintenance is to minimize the risk of experiencing an issue while driving. Since one issue can snowball into another (and more expensive) issue, maintenance is also a great way to avoid more costly repairs. By replacing parts and fluids before they break or fully degrade, you can keep your vehicle running like it should.

Despite the practical implications of preventive maintenance, some motorists skip out on these services. Are you one of them? Do you know someone who keeps putting off car maintenance? If so, we encourage you and your friends to reconsider that stance. Following the manufacturer's maintenance guidelines can be a benefit in more ways than one.

Let's take a closer look:

1) Reduce Unexpected Repairs: Picture this: You're driving and suddenly the check engine light turns on. Perhaps you were having a good day. Alternatively, this could be the last straw in an already off one. Regardless, no one likes an expense they didn't expect. Following your automotive maintenance plan decreases the chance of seeing a dashboard warning light. When you follow the maintenance guidelines, you address what is recommended at that time instead of waiting for an issue to occur (often at the least favorable time).

2) Keep Your Plans: If you run into an issue suddenly, you need to find time to get your vehicle into the auto repair shop. If you had any upcoming plans that require transportation, such as getting to work or visiting friends, you may need to cancel them or find a ride. When you follow a maintenance plan, you have more control over your time. You can look ahead in your owner's manual, so you know when you're due for service and plan accordingly.

2) Keep Your Warranty Intact: If you're covered by the manufacturer's warranty (or most aftermarket warranties), you're required to take care of your vehicle. Make sure you stay compliant with the agreement so you're not on the line should something fail that is covered. We recommend keeping a folder in your vehicle where you can keep your maintenance records as proof, should you ever need them.

3) Increase Sale Value: Maybe you plan on driving your car until it can't drive anymore, but it's possible you'll choose to sell it in the future. A good maintenance history will net you points with buyers. You can also use this history to negotiate a higher sales price than a vehicle without proof of its maintenance. We recommend keeping a folder in your vehicle where you can store receipts for maintenance services and products you use on your vehicle.

At Advanced Auto Care, we don't like surprises (unless they're the good kind). We offer preventive maintenance services to help our customers avoid surprises on the road.
